Maths
At St Nicholas CE Primary we are developing a mastery approach to the teaching of maths to ensure fluency, reasoning and problem solving. We aim to do this by:
- Ensuring our children have access to a high quality maths curriculum that is both challenging and enjoyable.
- Allowing opportunities to revisit and deepen children’s understanding of mathematical concepts
- Using a variety of strategies to ensure fluency and the ability to recall and apply knowledge accurately
Our curriculum is mapped by the White Rose Maths Hub scheme of work. We focus on a progression from concrete resources, to pictorial representations and finally into the numerical abstract to aid our children’s conceptual understanding.
Numbots is used from EYFS to Year 2 to to help develop number confidence and TT Rockstars is used from Y2 to Y6 to develop times tables’ recall.
From Y1, each teacher plans around the three areas: Learn it! Use it! Solve it! Focusing on the development of mathematical fluency.
We aim for each child to:-

Encourage the use of mental calculations and choose and efficient strategies to work out the answers.
